SHIVA SADHU, VARANASI
Looking for an interesting looking sadhu (holy man) along the Ganges riverside in Varanasi for my Chakra series, i encountered this one in full Shiva attire and accessories appearing out of nowhere and in front of a perfect colour coordinated background.
After getting his nod of consent I took a series of images that ended up being perfect for my Ajna Chakra composite. This can be seen in the Chakra collection. Of course, these guys are often dressed up to make some money from having their photo taken by tourists, so I was happy to part with some rupees for him, and it was well worth it.
The ascetic’s life in India is often one of extreme poverty. You can’t blame their need to make some quick cash along the famous riverfront where so many tourists hire boats to get some views on the burning ghats away from the shoreline and all the often aggressive touts charging exorbitant amounts for photos in the cremation areas. Despite its reputation for being a spiritual place, I found Varanasi to have a rather dark and sinister atmosphere, with death everywhere and people on the take. That’s India for you, where there are tourists, there are squadrons of pickpockets, scammers and all kinds of other shysters at work trying to separate you from your hard earned cash. They really do consider all western tourists to be walking ATMs.
