ROSES
Food stylist Mary Harris, and I made regular trips to the farmers markets in Everleigh on Saturday mornings to source some authentic products to shoot for our still life series. Roses are seasonal and they get snapped up quickly because of their unique look and low price. We had to snatch the very last bunch that particular day, but immediately I knew that they had great potential. After trying a few arrangements Mary decided to give them a loose flatlay layout on this beautiful background we sourced from the best prop house in Sydney, Major and Tom.
Originally a metal barrel that had come from an old country farm near Parkes, subsequently flattened into a beautiful tabletop with superb patina ideal for this kind of darker still life. I used softened side window light to bring out their subtle colour and details followed by some post processing to desaturate and compress the colour palette. Of course Mary’s initial arrangement just “worked” perfectly and my job was relatively easy.
